About Areas of focus
Areas of focus allows teachers to create and save a customised set of syllabus outcomes and progression indicators for a select group of students, to use for explicit teaching of literacy and numeracy across the curriculum and to monitor students’ learning in PLAN2.
With Areas of focus teachers can:
- Select and maintain a focus on any syllabus outcome(s) from any key learning area K-10
- Be guided by NESA mapping of the learning progressions to English and Mathematics syllabus outcomes
- Generate Class observations or Student indicator progress analysis for your Areas of focus without the need to reselect indicators or students
- Create Areas of focus templates that may be shared and used by other teachers in the school.
How to access Areas of focus
Prior to creating an area of focus, it is recommended that you create your small group tuition group first.
From 'PLAN2 - Small group tuition admin'
- Log in to the ALAN homepage.
- Click the PLAN2 - Small group tuition admin link.
- In PLAN2 - Small group tuition admin page, select 'Areas of focus'.
From 'PLAN2'
- Select PLAN2 link from the ALAN homepage to open the PLAN2 application.
- From the PLAN2 menu (three horizontal lines in the top right corner), select ‘Areas of focus’.
- The ‘Areas of focus’ screen will open. Click on the tabs ‘New’, ‘Existing’ or ‘Templates’ to create a new area of focus, view existing Areas of focus, or view Areas of focus templates.
How to create an Area of focus
Prior to creating an area of focus, it is recommended that you create your small group tuition group first.
- Select the PLAN2 link on the ALAN homepage to open the PLAN2 application.
- From the menu (three horizontal lines in the top right corner), select ‘Areas of focus’.
- In the Areas of focus screen, click the ‘New area of focums’ button. This will open the ‘Area of focus - New’ screen where you can follow the next steps.
- Step 1: Select students – Which students will you be focusing on?
- Select Year
- Select Class or group - if you are using this Area of focus for the small group tuition program, select your SGT group
- Select one or more Student(s)
- Click ‘Next’ to proceed to the next step.
- Step 2: Select syllabus outcomes – What are your focus syllabus outcomes?
- Select one or multiple Key learning area(s)
- Select one or multiple Stage(s)
- Select one or multiple Syllabus outcome(s)
- Click ‘Next’ to proceed to the next step.
- Note: You may skip Step 2 if you do not wish to use syllabus outcomes as guide when selecting your progression indicators. To skip this step, click ‘Skip’.
- Step 3: Select progression indicators
- View the list of sub-elements and indicators by using the browse filters. You can browse by: ‘All literacy’, ‘All numeracy’, or by the syllabus outcome(s) that you selected in Step 2. Click on one of these filters to view the list of relevant sub-elements.
- From the list of sub-elements, select one or more progression level(s) to view the list of relevant indicators. Note: Progression levels mapped to syllabus outcomes are displayed with dark borders. For example:
- Select one or more indicator(s) from the list. Your selected indicator(s) will be added to your Focus cart.
- You can also use the assessment filter to filter and select indicators mapped to a DoE assessment
- Step 4: Review and save
- In the ‘Review and save’ screen you will see the list of student(s), syllabus outcome(s) and progression indicator(s) that you selected in the previous steps.
- Type in the name of your area of focus in the Area of focus name field.
- Type in a description for your area of focus in the Description field.
- Click on the checkbox if you want to save your area of focus indicators as a template.
- Step 4: Review and save - Additional information for SGT
- If you selected a small group tuition (SGT) group for your area of focus, in the ‘Review and save’ screen you will be able to add more information about your SGT.
- Select the Term and Week for the Projected start and end date field
- Select the Tuition focus from the dropdown field
- Select the Mode of delivery from the dropdown field
- Select the Frequency and Length of sessions from the dropdown field
- Optional: Type in Teaching strategies in the text field
- Click ‘Save’ to save your new area of focus. Once done, the ‘Existing’ Areas of focus screen will open where you will see your newly created area of focus.
- If you selected a small group tuition (SGT) group for your area of focus, in the ‘Review and save’ screen you will be able to add more information about your SGT.
- View ‘My focus cart’
- You can view your focus cart at any step of creating an area of focus. To view your focus cart, click on the ‘My focus cart’ box located at the top right side of the screen.
- The ‘My focus cart’ pop-up screen displays the list of student(s), syllabus outcome(s) and progression indicator(s) you have selected so far.
- You can view your focus cart at any step of creating an area of focus. To view your focus cart, click on the ‘My focus cart’ box located at the top right side of the screen.
- Once your area of focus has been successful created and saved, it will be listed in the ‘Existing’ Areas of focus screen.
