Create a template while creating a new Area of focus:

You can select to create a new template when you create a new Area of focus.  


  1. Follow the steps in creating a new Area of focus
  2. In Step 4 – Review and save, tick the checkbox ‘Tick to also save indicators as a template...’ before saving your Area of focus.




  3. Click the 'Save' button to save your new Area of focus and new template.


  4. You will see your newly created Areas of focus template in the ‘Templates’ tab.

Create a template from the Areas of focus templates screen:

  1. Select the PLAN2 tile on the ALAN homepage.
  2. From the menu (three horizontal lines in the top right corner), select ‘Areas of focus’. 
  3. In the Areas of focus screen, click the ‘Templates’ tab. The ‘Templates’ tab will display the list of existing Areas of focus templates.


  4. In the ‘Templates’ tab screen, click the ‘New template’ button. This will open the ‘Template - New’ screen where you can follow the next steps.


  5. Step 1: Select syllabus outcomes – What are your focus syllabus outcomes? 
    • Select one or multiple Key learning area(s) 
    • Select one or multiple Stage(s
    • Select one or multiple Syllabus outcome(s) 
    • Click ‘Next’ to proceed to the next step. 
    • Note: You may skip Step 1 if you do not wish to use syllabus outcomes as guide when selecting your progression indicators. To skip this step, click ‘Skip’.


  6. Step 2: Select progression indicators 
    • View the list of sub-elements and indicators by using the browse filters. You can browse by: ‘All literacy’, ‘All numeracy’, or by the syllabus outcome(s) that you selected in Step 1. Click on one of these filters to view the list of relevant sub-elements.  
    • From the list of sub-elements, select one or more progression level(s) to view the list of relevant indicators.  
    • Note: Progression levels mapped to syllabus outcomes are displayed with dark borders. For example:  
    • Select one or more indicator(s) from the list. Your selected indicator(s) will be added to your Focus cart.


  7. Step 3: Review and save 
    • In the ‘Review and save’ screen you will see the list of student(s), syllabus outcome(s) and progression indicator(s) that you selected in the previous steps.  
    • Type in the name of your area of focus in the Template name field. 
    • Type in a description for your area of focus in the Description field. 
    • Click ‘Save’ to save your new Areas of focus template. 
    • Once done, you will see your newly created Areas of focus template in the ‘Templates’ tab. 
  8. View ‘My focus cart’ 
    • You can view your focus cart at any step of creating an area of focus. To view your focus cart, click on the ‘My focus cart’ box located at the top right side of the screen.   
    • The ‘My focus cart’ pop-up screen displays the list of student(s), syllabus outcome(s) and progression indicator(s) you have selected so far. 
  9. Once done, you will see your newly created Areas of focus template in the ‘Templates’ tab.
