Overview
The Indicator progress analysis (BETA) allows teachers to evaluate the learning of a group of students, in selected indicators, between two points in time, as recorded by all existing observation sources.
It does this by:
- providing a graph of the updates to the statuses of selected progression indicators
- displaying visually the week, term and year in which an indicator status was updated
- showing the duration of each status, before it was updated to a new status
- offering a summation of the ‘movement’ of observations between the starting status and ending status
- allowing teachers to see all existing observation sources on screen at once so that progress can be evaluated across the curriculum
In addition, the Indicator progress analysis displays an interactive summary table with ‘Start’ and ‘End’ totals for all statuses, as well as total ‘Movement’ between two points in time, for the evaluation of progress.
Viewing options of the Indicator progress analysis
Depending on their evaluation focus, teachers may:
- see the progress for a cohort of students one indicator at a time, or
- see the progress recorded against many selected indicators, one student at a time.
This analysis supports professional reflections on individual student learning progress between two points in time, and the triangulation of observations so that targeted teaching can be re-aligned.

How to access Indicator progress:
- Select the PLAN2 tile on the ALAN homepage.
- Select the 'Analyse' tile
- Select the 'Indicator progress (BETA)' tile
How to view Indicator progress
You can generate and Student indicator progress by selecting options from any of these filters:
- View observations by Sub-element levels – this filter allows users to select the student and indicators that they want to analyse
- View observations by Areas of focus - this filter allows users to select an existing area of focus and specific student that they want to analyse
- View observations by Assessments - this filter allows users to select a set of progression indicators and observations mapped to a specific DoE assessment
How to generate the Indicator progress analysis (Beta)
To generate the analysis, teachers must first make their selection of indicators and students for the analysis via one of these filters:
- By Sub-element levels - Browse through sub-element levels across the domains of literacy and/or numeracy.
- By Areas of focus – Browse through saved area of focus with pre-selected indicators and students.
- By Assessments - Select a set of progression indicators mapped to a specific DoE assessment.
MAKE SELECTIONS BY SUB-ELEMENT LEVELS
This filter allows teachers to select indicators for the analysis by browsing through sub-element levels across the domains of literacy and/or numeracy.
In the selection panel (left side of the ‘Student indicator progress’ screen), follow these steps:
- Select Browse by sub-element levels
- Select the Year level, Class or group and Student you want to analyse
- Select the Observation dates (date when the observations were recorded) or specify a date range by picking the year, term and week.
- Select the progression indicators you would like to focus on.
- Select Generate analysis button
The Indicator progress view options will be displayed.
Select your preferred analysis view option from the two options provided:
Once selected, the analysis will generate and will allow teachers to:
- see a timeline of changes to observations between selected dates
- see changes to observations from all available observation sources
- see a summation of the trajectory of progress expressed as ‘movement’
- compare the starting and ending statuses for the selected period per observation source
- compare ‘Start’, ‘End’ and ‘Movement’ totals for the evaluation of progress
- use on-screen filters and interact with summary values
- export the analysis to Excel or Word
VIEW OBSERVATIONS BY AREAS OF FOCUS
This filter allows teachers to analyse a student’s progress for the indicators previously saved in an area of focus.
In the selection panel (left side of the ‘Class observations’ screen), follow these steps:
- Select View observations by Areas of focus
- Select the Year level, Class or group and Student you want to analyse
- Select the Observation dates (date when the observations were recorded) or specify a date range by picking the year, term and week.
- A list of existing Areas of focus related to your selected Year and Class or group will be displayed. Select an Area of focus from the list. Details of your selected Area of focus will be displayed on the right side of the screen.
- Select Generate analysis button
The Indicator progress view options will be displayed.
Select your preferred analysis view option from the two options provided:

SELECT INDICATORS BY ASSESSMENTS
This filter allows teachers to select a set of progression indicators mapped to a specific DoE assessment.
In the selection panel (left side of the ‘Class observations’ screen), follow these steps:
- Select View observations by Assessments
- Select the Year level, Class or group and Student you want to analyse
- Select the Observation dates (date when the observations were recorded) or specify a date range by picking the year, term and week.
Select an Assessment
- Select Generate analysis button
- The Indicator progress view options will be displayed.

Summary section
The summary section provides a snapshot and summary of a group of students.
- Review the total number of students' or indicators within student status movement (up, down, none) and across observation statuses
- Compare different observation sources and contexts (Teachers / assessments)
Summary section - Options
You can turn off the movement section of the entire summary table by selecting the ‘Options’ button in the action bar.
