Why are the EAL/D Learning progression phases appearing in PLAN2?
Being able to identify students who are learning English as an additional language or dialect, and knowing their EAL/D learning progression phase, has direct benefits for teachers as they plan for the literacy and numeracy progress of every student.
EAL/D students are learning the English language at the same time as developing their literacy and numeracy.
Understanding where students are on the EAL/D learning progression can assist teachers in the effective tailoring of teaching to support literacy and numeracy development.
What do the abbreviations stand for? What do the phases mean?
The EAL/D Learning progression phases appear in PLAN2 as abbreviations.

- BLL = Beginning English: Limited literacy background
- E = Emerging English
- D = Developing English
- C = Consolidating English
The phases describe how students with English as an additional language or dialect (EAL/D) typically progress in their English language learning.
Each phase is associated with learner characteristics
