Assessment observations in PLAN2

PLAN2 has had recent enhancements which support teachers in viewing their classroom observations separately to observations which come from mapped assessments.

Observations which come from mapped DoE assessments into PLAN2 represent a valuable source of evidence which supports:

  • data triangulation
  • identification of student application of learned skills in a different context
  • collegial discussions on consistency of teacher judgement
  • insight into specific contexts of skill demonstration which may be more difficult for a student.

An observation from a DoE mapped assessment is simply one more valuable source of evidence.

  • Observations from mapped assessments do not override the observations made by teachers in schools.
  • PLAN2 supports observations across learning areas and has features which ensure that no observation is lost.

The PLAN2 default screen will show the most recent observations for a student, regardless of source (observations from classes or groups the students belong to and mapped assessments) when the observation source is 'Last recorded observation (teacher or assessment)'.

Class observations analysis - Observation source: 'Latest from teacher or assessment'

The screen is currently showing an observation from the Check in Year 5 Reading assessment as this was the most recent observation.

It can be seen here that Jane Anderson has an observation of ‘Not demonstrated’ from the Check in Reading Assessment.

Change observation source

Switching observation source to 'Last recorded in this class or group’ allows teachers to see their classroom observations.

Here is my observation source as ‘Last recorded in this class or group’:

Selecting 'Last recorded in this class or group' as your observation source maintains the teacher’s classroom observations irrespective of any other observation sources, including assessments.

This observation source allows teachers to compare the assessment observations with their classroom observations and to maintain the two separately.

The classroom teacher’s observations remain always as the current status when the observation source ‘Last recorded in this class or group’ is selected. They are not overridden by the any other status, including assessments, and they are never lost.

Entire history of observations (All observations)

In addition, clicking the student observation cell and selecting 'View all observations' allows teachers to see the entire history of observations for any student, in any indicator.

Here I can see the full history of observations for this student in the same indicator mapped to the Check-in assessment.

  • The pop-up screen clearly details the date of each observation which exists, along with the source of the observation.
  • Teachers can easily compare assessment observations with existing classroom observation for an informed analysis of student needs.

In this example, the Check-in assessment observation (CY5N-S2) serves to confirm the teacher’s classroom observation and is one more source of evidence in the analysis of how the student has progressed in this skill since their first observation in 2022.
