How to create Area of focus


  1. Select the PLAN2 tile on the ALAN homepage.
  2. Select  the 'Plan' tile

  3. Select the 'Areas of focus' tile

  4. Select 'New area of focus' button

View ‘My focus cart’ 


You can view your focus cart at any step of creating an area of focus. 

  • To view your focus cart, click on the ‘My focus cart’ box located at the top right side of the screen.

  • The ‘My focus cart’ pop-up screen displays the list of student(s), syllabus outcome(s) and progression indicator(s) you have selected so far.

  • Once your area of focus has been successful created and saved, it will be listed in the ‘Existing’ Areas of focus screen.


Step 1: Select students – Which students will you be focusing on? 

  • Select Year 
  • Select Class or group
  • Select one or more Students
  • Click ‘Next’ to proceed to the next step.



Step 2: Select syllabus outcomes – What are your focus syllabus outcomes? 

  • Select Stage(s)
  • Select Key learning area(s)
  • Select one or multiple Syllabus outcome(s)
  • Select ‘View content’ to view and select one or multiple Syllabus content point(s).
  • Click ‘Next’ to proceed to the next step.

    Note: You may skip Step 2 if you do not wish to use syllabus outcomes as guide when selecting your progression indicators.




Step 3: Select progression indicators - Which V3 indicators will support the learning focus? 

Browse for indicators via the ‘Show indicators’ filters. 

  • Select from ‘Literacy', 'Numeracy', 'Assessment’ indicators or indicators mapped to your 'Syllabus’ outcomes or content points.


  • Literacy progression indicators

  • Numeracy progression indicators

  • Assessment indicators (Mapped to Learning Progression v3 indicators)

  • Syllabus Outcomes / Focus area indicators (Mapped to Learning Progression v3 sub-element levels)
  • Syllabus content points (Mapped to Learning Progression v3 sub-element levels)


  • Select the tags beside your outcomes and content points to view and add indicators from sub-element levels mapped to your outcomes and/or content points.

  • Select one or more Progression indicator(s) from the list. Your selected indicator(s) will be added to your Focus cart

Step 4: Review and save 

  • In the ‘Review and save’ screen you will see the list of student(s), syllabus outcome(s) and progression indicator(s) that you selected in the previous steps.
  • Type in the name of your area of focus in the Area of focus name field.
  • Type in a description for your area of focus in the Description field.
  • Click ‘Save’ to save your new area of focus.


  • Once done, the Areas of focus screen will open where you will see your newly created area of focus.
