Overview
PLAN2 has a new observation status scale.
The student observations which existed against version 2 of the progressions have been converted to the new observation scale and migrated against version 3 of the progressions.
The following diagram summarises how the observation statuses were converted:
Every observation recorded in PLAN2 has been migrated to V3. This includes observations against V2 indicators which were retired. No observations have been lost.
New PLAN2 observation status scale explained
What is an observation status?
The observation status represents a student’s demonstrated proficiency in all or some* of the skills or behaviours described by an indicator in an observation or assessment opportunity.
What are the new observation statuses?
Not demonstrated | |
Partially demonstrated
Demonstrated | |
Consolidated |
What does an asterisk (*) mean?
In instances where the observation status does not apply to all of the skills and behaviours described by an indicator, the observation status may be flagged with an asterisk (*). This indicates that the status only applies to some of the skills or behaviours described by an indicator.
Who can assign an observation status?
Teachers – direct recording of observations in PLAN2
The teacher recorded observation status represents a teacher’s judgement in observing a student’s demonstrable behaviours.
Assessments – observations received from DoE assessments linked to PLAN2
The observations received from an assessment represent a summation of a student’s demonstration of learning in an assessment opportunity in relation to the indicator, based on pre-defined mapping rules.
Status definition, status interpretation and next steps in learning
Status | Definition | Skills, understandings and capabilities were… | How should a teacher interpret this status?
No status | No indicator observation.
| not assessed | This is the default status in PLAN2.
This observation status is visible when no other observation status has been applied. It cannot be applied by the teacher.
When ‘Not assessed’ is the status displaying for a student against a learning progression indicator, the student:
| |
| The student has been provided with an opportunity to show the skills, understandings and/or capabilities represented by the learning progression indicator but they did not show them.
| not shown | When ‘Not demonstrated’ is the status displaying for a student against a learning progression indicator, the student:
| |
Partially demonstrated | The student has been provided with an opportunity to show the skills, understandings and capabilities represented by the learning progression indicator and they showed them in a limited capacity. | shown in a limited capacity
| When ‘Partially demonstrated’ is the status displaying for a student against a learning progression indicator, the student:
| |
Demonstrated | Student has shown the skills, understandings and capabilities described by the learning progression indicator.
| shown | When ‘Demonstrated’ is the status displaying for a student against a learning progression indicator, the student:
| |
Consolidated | Student has consistently shown the skills, understandings and capabilities described by the learning progression indicator.
| shown consistently | When ‘Consolidated’ is the status displaying for a student against a learning progression indicator, the student:
‘Consolidated’ is a status reserved for teacher application only. DoE assessments do not map to ‘consolidated’ in PLAN2.

* Not entire indicator
| The status on which an asterisk appears applies only to some of the skills, understandings and capabilities represented by the learning progression indicator. | n/a | When the asterisk (*) appears on one of the statuses, it indicates that the status does not apply to every skill or behaviour represented by the indicator.
The status may apply to one skill or more but not to the entire indicator because:
The asterisk may be applied to the following statuses only:
