The Best Start Kindergarten Assessment is a one-on-one literacy and numeracy assessment conducted for all Kindergarten students in the first five weeks of school. The assessment identifies student’s literacy and numeracy skills on entry to Kindergarten. Student responses observed from the assessment are mapped to the National Literacy and Numeracy Learning Progressions. The learning progressions, used in conjunction with the NSW syllabuses, will support teachers to target student learning and differentiate teaching experiences for students in greater detail.
The Best Start Kindergarten Assessment:
- is conducted online, enabling teachers to enter responses directly onto a tablet or computer
- includes some new and revised items that better reflect current literacy and numeracy research
- enables teachers to capture observations of students skills and knowledge quickly and accurately
- transfers assessment information to PLAN2 upon lodgement of assessment.
